Abstract

This study aimed to compare the effects of two 10-week walking programs of different intensities on body composition, VO2Max, and the fatty tissue hormones adiponectin, ghrelin, resistin and leptin, for which exercise relationships are yet to be described, in pre-menopausal women. Forty healthy sedentary pre-menopausal women, 40-49 yrs of age, enrolled in the study and were divided into brisk (BWG; n=14) and moderate tempo walking groups (MTWG; n=12), and controls (CG; n=14). Exercise groups walked for ten weeks, five days per week increasing steadily from 30min per day up to 54min. BWG and MTWG walked at 74 and 54% of their maximum heart rate reserve (HRRmax), respectively. Body composition, VO2Max, adipose tissue hormones’ blood levels of all participants were measured at the start and completion of the study. Following the training programs, significantly more favorable changes were observed in body weight, lean body weight, body fat percent, fat weight, waist-to-hip ratio, body mass index and VO2Max in the BWG compared with the MTWG. The accompanying favorable changes in fat cell hormones leptin, ghrelin and resistin make brisk walking more advisable in the prevention of obesity and cardiovascular diseases.
