Abstract
Physical inactivity rates are higher in females compared to males, and during pregnancy these rates are even higher. On the other hand, it is our knowledge that exercise of appropriate duration, frequency and intensity has many positive effects on maternal and foetal health. Regular exercise during pregnancy is effective in preventing excessive weight gain, reducing postpartum body weight, improving glycemic control, reducing low back pain, improving life quality and reducing depressive symptoms. Mild or moderate level exercise intensity does not have any side effects on foetal health. When prescribing exercise to pregnant women, activity levels before pregnancy should be taken into consideration and aerobic exercise combined with mild strength exercises should be prescribed. Activities with high risk for falls and abdominal trauma and exhaustion of the pregnant women should be avoided. Relevant literature on the subject is being discussed in the review.
