Fundamental definitions concerning proprioception and coordinative aptitudes, and the functions of organs and receptors, especially of mechanoreceptors are given first in this review. Next, the clinical importance of proprioception, and its effect on functional stability are addressed; studies related to ankle, knee, and shoulder proprioception are assessed. Proprioception measurement methods are then explained. Finally the place of proprioception in sports injury prevention and rehabilitation is given in relation to main approaches, and practices in connection to different joints, and rehabilitation stages are described.
