Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate C825T polymorphism of the guanine nucleotide-binding protein beta polypeptide 3 (GNB3), which is believed to be positively related to cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus and obesity; in relation to anthropometric, physiological and biochemical differences among regularly exercising athletes and sedentary subjects. Randomly selected volunteers aged 18-27 years, who were either soccer players from the Turkish Super and First Division Leagues or physically non active, sedentary physical education students formed the study groups. Anthropometric parameters, aerobic and anaerobic thresholds, and biochemical parameters were measured. Blood total-, HDL-, and LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, homocysteine, folate, vitamin B12 levels, haemogram counts and GNB3 C825T polymorphism were assayed. No statistically significant differences were found for age, height, body mass, body fat ratio, fat free mass and BMI, related to GNB3 C825T polymorphism (p>0.05). Positively significant relationships among heart rate at the anaerobic threshold and haemoglobin levels according to GNB3 C825T polymorphism (p<0.05) were observed, in revenge. To conclude, a positive relationship between GNB3 C825T polymorphism and athletic performance was determined. Furthermore, participants who had the TT allele in GNB3 C825T polymorphism had lower haemoglobin scores, compared with participants having the CC and CT alleles.
