Abstract

Musculoskeletal soft tissue injuries constitute the majority of sports-related injuries. Along with genetic factors, multiple risk factors are implicated in the etiology of soft tissue injuries. The Achilles, patellar and rotator cuff tendons, and anterior cruciate ligament injuries were proved to be common soft tissue injuries for which a genetic contribution has been proposed. The relationship between COL1A1, COL5A1, COL12A1, COL14A1 and TNC gene polymorphisms and soft tissue injuries has been revealed in recent studies. With predictive genomics DNA profiling for athletic performance and sport injuries, there will be a way to understand genetic advantages, and which genetic barriers are to be overcome. The present review article focuses on recent developments on the identification of genetic risk factors related to tendon and ligament injuries.
