Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the reliability and validity of “The Attitude in Physical Education Scale”, which was developed by Subramaniam and Silverman (10) for secondary school students who are involved in physical education and sports lectures. The research was conducted on a total of 636 students from four different secondary schools in three different districts of Izmir. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was applied in order to assess the scale’s structure validity, and to confirm factor structures of the original form on present data. To determine the reliability of the scale, “Cronbach’s Alpha”, “Spearman-Brown Coefficient” and “Guttman Split-Half Coefficient” scores were analyzed. Test-retest reliability was analyzed over an interval of three weeks. CFA results reveal that the scale applied has a structure consisting of two super- and four sub-dimensions, as in the original scale. According to the figures obtained, all there scales have enough credibility for all their factors. The findings disclose that the scale is reliable and valid to be used to determine the attitudes of secondary school students towards physical education and sports lectures, and physical education teachers.
