Abstract

Several studies have revealed that exercise has positive effects on chronic diseases. There many studies that examine the effects of exercise on psychiatric diseases, as well. These studies demonstrate that exercise provides mental well-being, reduces symptoms and has protective effects, especially in the treatment of major depression, bipolar disorder and dementia. The effects of exercise on neurotrophic factors, neurotransmitter and cytokine release, and cerebral blood flow are used to clarify its mechanisms in psychiatric disorders. Despite this information, there are still no specific exercise prescriptions that can be used in psychiatric disorders, and studies are not sufficient on the subject.
